Tenebrim Tam of the School of the Fourfold Path guides new Elementalists through offering incense to hidden elemental djinn around Night Harbor before testing their affinity for fire, earth, water, and air.
New elementalists start by handing a humble note to Tenebrim Tam inside the School of the Fourfold Path. He greets you warmly, ties a training sash around your shoulders to mark you as a student, and explains the school's core philosophy — that magic isn't just about commanding the elements, but living in harmony with them. Your task is to seek out the city's resident djinn, invisible elemental spirits who make their homes inside statues and idols scattered around Night Harbor. Tenebrim outfits you with a Pinwheel that spins faster the closer you get to one of these hidden spirits, a Box of Elemental Incense to offer them, and a Small Velvet Bag to carry home whatever they give you in return.
Four idols are tucked around the city, one for each element. A small scarab idol sits just downstairs from Tenebrim within the school itself, rewarding an offering of incense with an Earthen Pearl. A covered well south and west of the school, marked by a jackal statue, yields an Aqua Pearl. The Night Market forge area holds a second scarab-style idol near the blacksmiths for a Fiery Pearl, and finally, a bird statue perched at the very top of the towering mage spire near the North Gate produces an Airy Pearl once you've climbed the ramps and platforms to reach it. Combine all four pearls into the velvet bag once collected, then return the completed bag along with the pinwheel, incense box, and your training sash to Tenebrim. He's delighted with your progress and rewards you with the First Degree Fourfold Sash, formally marking you as a first-degree student, along with a Simple Brass Coin to bring back once you've gained some experience.
At level 3, return to Tenebrim with your coin and sash in hand. He sends you out through the Night Harbor gates to gather a small assortment of field reagents — two fire beetle glands, two bone chips, two bat wings, and a water flask — all of which can be found on the wildlife and skeletal remains scattered through the newbie yards. Turning these in alongside your First Degree sash earns you a Reinforced First Degree Fourfold Sash and a referral to Tenebrim's assistant, Pedram, who's preparing a set of elemental trials in the back of the school.
Pedram explains that he's distilled the elemental essence out of the reagents you gathered into four attuned crystals, one for each element, and that your job is to prove yourself against each in turn. Starting with the Red Crystal, head down to the training grounds and use it to summon a level 5 elemental — in this case a fire elemental — defeat it, and loot its Fiery Essence to bring back to Pedram. He'll then hand over the Brown Crystal for an earth elemental, the Blue Crystal for a water elemental, and finally the Translucent Crystal for an air elemental, with each fight following the same pattern of summon, defeat, and loot the corresponding essence. If a fight goes badly, simply return the empty crystal to Pedram for a fresh one and try again. Once all four essences have been collected and handed over, Pedram is thoroughly impressed and sends you back to Tenebrim with a note vouching for your success.
Presenting the note lets Tenebrim in on the good news, and he asks you to choose your elemental affinity by handing him your preferred essence along with your Reinforced sash. Whichever element you choose determines the Level 4 spell scroll you receive as a reward, and Tenebrim marks the occasion by adding a second seal to your sash, upgrading it to the Second Degree Fourfold Sash and formally recognizing you as a second-degree student of the Fourfold Path. Before heading off to continue your training, it's worth swinging back by Pedram with any leftover crystals or essences — he'll gladly trade each one for a Crushed Malachite, a handy component for future elemental summoning.
